In a show of sportsmanship that goes beyond the fierce Ashes rivalry, Travis Head has disclosed he sent a private message of support to England's Ben Duckett.
The act of kindness came after Duckett faced a wave of criticism on social media.
Online Video Ignited Debate
The situation began when unverified video clips circulated online.
The footage purportedly showed Duckett, seemingly intoxicated, in a tense late-night exchange with a fan.
This took place during the team's mid-series break in Noosa, unexpectedly placing the opening batter in an unwanted spotlight.
England Management Addressed Conduct
Earlier that day, England's managing director, Rob Key, had spoken out.
He called excessive drinking "totally inappropriate" and confirmed he would be investigating reports from the trip.
“I get along with Ducky well, I reached out to him to see if he was going alright,” Head told reporters.
He said this at the MCG following England's two-day victory in the fourth Test.
An Appeal for Understanding
Head stressed the human element of the situation. "Everyone is still human. What you do in personal time is up to you."
He noted the public scrutiny of their lives but concluded the reaction was "a bit stiff [unfair]."
"It was blown out of all proportion," Head added. "I reckon it was an England fan."
Offering his view, the Australian batter said, "It wasn't a genuine problem in my opinion."
He suggested that "With long breaks between matches, the media needs topics to discuss."
Stokes Backs His Player
Prior to this, England captain Ben Stokes had publicly defended Duckett.
In an emotive press conference before the fourth Test, Stokes asked for "empathy" towards his teammate.
Moving Forward
On the field, Duckett made 34 crucial runs in England's successful chase of 175.
After the match, he posted online, stating, "Amazing end to a pretty tough week."
Head said he hoped for more play in the next Test, remarking, "Hopefully we can play a bit longer next week and there’s less stuff to talk about."
