On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
