The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
